In the summer of 2018, Determined Art Movement (D.A.M.) expanded a sister branch in New Delhi.
This initiative is by and for the local communities of different cities within India. Our primary focus is to create a space that allows for mutual learning and empowerment, collaborating with local artists and activists. In July we embarked on a mural-making journey, creating relevant collective pieces for a diversity of people around Delhi. Our long-term vision is to create meaningful and accessible conversations about equity through the medium of art.
En el verano del 2018, Determined Art Movement (D.A.M.) expandió una sucursal hermana en Nueva Delhi. Esta iniciativa es por y para las comunidades locales de diferentes ciudades dentro de la India. Nuestro objetivo principal es crear un espacio que permita el aprendizaje y empoderamiento mutuo, colaborando con artistas y activistas locales. En julio embarcamos en un viaje para crear murales, creando piezas colectivas relevantes para una diversidad de personas en todo Delhi. Nuestra visión a largo plazo es crear conversaciones significativas sobre la equidad a través del arte.

How our work continues...
Cheeru (July 2021) was a commissioned piece for the Elisabeth Jones Art Center in Portland, Oregon as a part of their International Mural by Mail Project now managed by John Daniel Teply Atelier & Gallery. This was a creative endeavor to connect artists globally by mailing murals to their home countries and then we mail it back once we are done painting on it for the exhibition. D.A.M. members received this large vinyl fabric in Delhi on which someone had painted an image of person with their eyes closed, looking down. We had to add on to that image with our own interpretations, with help from with artists from Srijanatmak Manushi Sanstha we came up with the concept of a disabled bird with prosthetic legs and a broken wings, breaking the chains and flying to signify the concepts of prison abolition and disability justice.
Home is Where There is No Danger (October 2020) or Ghar Vahin Jahaan Koi Khatra Nahi written in Hindi script under one of bridges of the NH24 in East Delhi. "Koi Khatra Nahi" (There Is No Danger) is a poem by Omprakash Valmiki who is a Dalit writer. We took up a small space under the bridge to protest against incidents of caste atrocities and injustices towards lower caste communities, specifically the incidents of violence towards the Valmiki community in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh. We found it important to centre the work, voices and visibility of Dalit, Bahujan and Adivasi folks.

Satrangi Raah or Rainbow Road (June 2019) was our collaboration with Nazariya: A Queer Feminist Resource Group. We conducted live art to bring awareness for LGBTQ issues with community members of Gurugram, Sector 15. They meet every Sunday morning for Raahgiri Day (Pedestrian's Day) - a vehicle free initiative.
ReAbility (March 2019) was our first live graffiti documentation for the CREA Reconference held in Kathmandu, Nepal where we engaged with activists and artists from all seven continents.
Paintability (2019) was our second endeavor with the AUD Disability Forum. This time we came together to create words and poetry as a collective of disabled college students to create solidarity and expression. Some of the quotes translated say "When will the time for accessibility come?" and "The rules of my body are different, not wrong".
Kalpana (2018) was a collaborative piece with SMS (Srijanatmak Manushi Sanstha), a grassroots N.G.O. based in Delhi that empowers communities through education.

Disability Pride (2018) was a collaboration with the Disability Forum of Ambedkar University Delhi (AUD) where college students with different disabilities gathered to work on ways to make art accessible through conversations and music. In the end, we came up with a graffiti styled mural that represented disability symbols and quotes.
Aam Ke Bagh (2018) resulted from our connection with the Salma Public School in the village of Rataul, Uttar Pradesh. The students participated in the painting process of a design created in partnership with the school, the mural depiction reflected are relevant imagery to their community. Students also collaborated in the creation of an environmental friendly Eco-Cooler made from recycled materials waste materials (seen on the left of the photograph).
